There are great elements, and visual FX, and they don't rely on cheap tricks to bring the horror. This much is true. But what it does immensely wrong is not just a matter of dragging it out too long over 10 episodes. But it stretches that allowance well past anywhere tolerable, even in the furthest capacity. Every episode is just jammed full of unnecessary bickering, trivialities, repeating of not just components of scenes, but like whole chunks of other episodes, and insufferable banalities too deep to list. Yes, all visual content has room for a build up, and refining of characters and ideas. But this is not the case with Hill House. All of the things you WANT the show to explain or elaborate on, or just give you more of, are treated like unimportant facts and meaningless showing off. Everything you want to fast forward through is showcased quite redundantly. It is edited in such a way where you can't just tune out the pointless bickering because somewhere in there will be a jump to the past to show something you actually have interest in. What it does well, it certainly does well. Tall man is excellent, albeit a bit too subtle, and brief. But his deliverance is note worthy. Not like some cheap screaming bloody face, which there are plenty of in the show. The ending is not as bad as others say. If you are thinking there will be some kind of stand off against the house, you are mistaken. That was not the point of the house, and would be just weird if the show ended that way. You get all the answers in the end. They may not be answers you care about, or agree with, but you are no longer asking the hows and whys that they force you to chew on during the 10 episode stretch. In the end, it is not the worst thing you'll watch, but you will definitely feel like you were dragged through the dirt for no real payoff. Years later, the siblings are still haunted by the ghosts of their past. Are the nightmares and apparitions just a manifestation of their trauma, or are they actually being haunted by ghosts? A tragic suicide forces the Crains to return to Hill House to seek answers to the many mysteries there. In my opinion, "Haunted Hill House" is by far Mike Flanagan's best series. The characters have strength, the atmosphere is awesome, the story is good but easy to understand and the shock moments are good and not cheap jump scares. Jan 30, 2023 i have tried to watch this multiple times. i stop every single time when the first irene comes on screen, doing a monologue about her husband being hanged from the ceiling or something. she is one of the worst actresses i have ever seen. i have legitimately stopped the show multiple times because i can't trust that it will have good content if there is such an utterly talentless actress featured so prominently. i honestly don't mind the rest of the show, but it can't be hard to find someone better. her being one of the only people of color in the cast leaves me wondering if the director has some prejudices that made it difficult to work with her. Jan 17, 2023 The Haunting of Hill House is phenomenal. This show has a wonderful blend of mystery, intrigue, horror, and sadness. Instead of trying to point out the good points of the show, it would be much more challenging trying to find any elements that were truly "bad". The actors deliver their lines naturally, the scenes roll along smoothly and sensibly, the story is touching and dark, and the show is compelling to keep watching throughout. Not only is Haunting of Hill House a good show, it's a phenomenal mixture of skilled storytelling, drama, horror, and suspense. Highly recommend.
